Maternity Clothes

I received the following comment from reader McKenzie today:

Georgie, I love your style.  It’s effortless, eclectic and - most importantly - LOOKS REALLY COMFORTABLE.  As a fellow pregnant woman, you are an inspiration to me.  I love your unique pregnancy finds and am inspired to look beyond most of the crappy junk that passes for maternity wear these days and think outside the box.

The comment made me smile.  A big huge grin actually.  This is exactly why I blog my outfits.  I don’t expect everyone to like my fashion taste - we all have different taste so clearly you won’t like everything I pick.  But if I can provide some inspiration then my job here is done.

McKenzie is right when she refers to ‘crappy junk that passes for maternity wear’.  I have been surprised by how little there is available to those of us pregos who refuse to give up our style, without spending a small fortune.  I have started pulling together a post with a bunch of links to online maternity stores that may be helpful to other pregnant or future-pregnant ladies out there!  Look out for it in the next few days.

Stripes are the new polka dot.
Did some shopping in Gap this evening.  I thought their maternity range was only available online but I happened to be walking past the store on 58th and Lex and noticed the word maternity.  What a novelty - shopping in a real store, with real clothes, and being able to take home my purchases immediately.
I now own three maternity tops.  They all have stripes.

Date Night Outfit
Last night we headed out to a restaurant in our hood called Taboon that we have been meaning to try for ages.  The food was great and it was adorable inside.  I was surprised to find this gem was packed - we don’t normally go beyond Ninth Avenue and this place is located on Tenth.
I have no idea where this dress is from.  Yes, that’s right.  I usually wear this as a dress.  I like my dresses short!  When I shopped my closet last night I realized it would make a perfect maternity top.
Sass & Bide jeans.  Not done up.  Not even a little bit.  Held together with a Bella Band.
Jimmy Choo boots.  Really really old and probably should be thrown out but I can’t bear to part with them.  They have ridiculously high heels and even I have trouble tottering along in them.
Betsy Johnson handbag.  Purchased on Ruelala with a credit I’ve had for ages.

Maternity jeans

My Paige maternity jeans arrived and I love them!  Although I will admit they are a touch too small so will be sending them back for a size 28.  They are certainly more expensive than a lot of other brands but I know my CPW (cost per wear) will result in them actually being a bargain.  I am an expert at justifying expensive purchases.  Oh, and thanks to the lovely ladies of tumblr who posted the 15% off Shopbop purchases - you saved me $30!  This photo does not do them justice but I’m posting it anyway because I’m so happy with them!!

Also, I have avoided the sideways pictures of late so I figured it was time to show you the bump progress.  Here it is!  It’s just a mini bump.

Update on the jeans

Another big thank you to my readers for coming to my rescue.  After posting yesterday about pregnancy jeans I learned the following:

  • The demi panels can get uncomfortable the further you get into your pregnancy and eventually won’t stay up
  • The big panel (I forget what it is called) will ensure the jeans will stay up when you are heavily pregnant and they can be folded down when you are still small(er)
  • Buy a size up because Heidi Klum is right - there will be some exploding of bum and thighs in the third trimester

As a result, I cashed in part of my birthday present from John (a generous maternity clothes spending spree) and ordered the second pair of Paige jeans with the big ol’ belly panel that I posted yesterday.  I did not order a size up, though.  Call me silly but I still have high hopes that my high metabolism will save me!!  I’m sure I will be hanging my head in 3 months time and admitting to you all that I am now the size of a house and need bigger jeans - we’ll see.

Skinny Maternity Jeans

I’m on a mission to buy maternity jeans.  I have only one pair of jeans left that I can button up and even those can only be worn for a couple of hours before they become uncomfortable.  I tried on a great pair of Juicy boot cut jeans today but I so rarely wear boot cut jeans that it would be a waste.

I turned to the internet and found the perfect pair.   Paige Skinny Maternity Jeans on Shopbop.  They have the stretch waistband but not all the way over the tummy - exactly what I was looking for.  Unfortunately Shopbop doesn’t have my size (27). I have searched the internet high and low and have had no luck finding another pair.  Boo hiss.

Shopbop does have these other Paige skinny maternity jeans but they have the big ol’ waistband that goes right over the belly. I think this looks kinda uncomfortable.  Hmm, not sure what to do.  Who has experience wearing maternity jeans?  Can you let me know your thoughts on the two different waistbands I have featured here?

Daily Work Outfit
I can’t wait to go maternity clothes shopping this weekend because it really is becoming a struggle to find outfits that are comfortable and appropriate for work.  Today I had the added difficulty of hiding my bump because I was meeting with a client that I’m not quite ready to share the news with.
Banana Republic top
White Charlotte Russe cami
Cue (Australian store) cardigan
Banana Republic belt
Anthro necklace
Jules & Jim Maternity Pants
Payless booties
The client I met with took my boss and me to the most delicious Italian restaurant for lunch.  I was the only one who cleared three courses and refused wine with my meal.  It’s hard not being able to explain why I am refusing wine and eating like a horse!
