Home Exchanges

You’ve heard me mention home exchanges multiple times on my blog.  We first got the idea from our neighbors Jess and Trevor who did a successful home exchange in Rome in 2008.  They used a website called HomeExchange.com™ - the very same one featured in the movie The Holiday.  We had a poke around the website and decided to give it a whirl.

You can send messages to listings that you are interested in and you will also receive messages from other people who have viewed your listing.  Once we find people who are interested in an exchange, we set up a conference call with them to discuss logistics etc.  A number of the places on the website are people’s second homes so you don’t even necessarily have to do a simultaneous exchange.

People often ask us if we are worried about theft or damage.  And the answer is no because firstly, we are also staying in their house with all their stuff and secondly, our doorman would notice if they attempted carrying our 50 inch television out the door.  The conference call also helps us to ascertain whether these people are ‘normal’.  I think maybe in future we might ask for copies of passports just so we know exactly who will be staying in our home.

It sounds great and it is great.  However, let’s be clear.  It only works if:

  • You have a nice apartment/house that other people would actually want to stay in.  If you live in a shoebox studio with wallpaper hanging off the walls I think you would have some trouble convincing someone to exchange with you.
  • You live in a desirable location.  No one wants to go to middle-of-nowhere, New Jersey.  Everyone wants to go to New York City.

There is an annual fee to list your home (around $200 I think) but other than that there are no other charges.  We’ve had two really fantastic exchanges - one in San Francisco and one in Vail.

Home Exchange: Potential

This is one of the places we have contacted regarding an exchange this Summer. It is jaw-droppingly amazing both inside and out.

Just look at this place.  They have a tower!

And a sun-drenched terrace overlooking a swimming pool - it should be a movie set.

And there is a bedroom at the top of the tower.  Now this is a room with a view.  This really seems too good to be true.  I’m not getting my hopes up.

The other places we contacted are equally amazing.  My fingers are crossed we can make this happen.

We have been having such great success with our home exchanges that we are actively looking for another one this Summer.  Well, probably more than one.  With me on maternity leave and John able to work from anywhere (to an extent) we are thinking of spending an entire month in France this Summer.  I know this probably sounds very fancy-fancy and expensive but that’s the beauty of home exchanges - the accomodation is all free!  We both fervently collect reward points so a lot of our flights are free too.
My ideal would be 1 week in Paris and then the rest of the time somewhere else in France.  Hopefully we can twist the arms of some our friends and/or family to join us for some of the time.  The place in the picture is on the Cote d’Azur.  Look at that view!
The hardest part will be lining up the exchanges but hopefully given our flexibility and the fact that Europeans all vacation during August it shouldn’t be too tricky.
We’ll be traveling in a great big pack this time - me, John, Winston and Baby Girl.  My days of being a lone traveler are well and truly over.

A Day in Dublin

This morning we headed into Dublin on the train.  Mum suggested I bring some reading material but I knew I would be happy to gaze out the window.  The view is a little better than the view on the NY subway.  Check out that sunshine.  The weather forecast tells me to expect sunshine for my entire trip!  Who says it rains in Ireland all the time?

We arrived into Dublin and headed straight for Grafton Street and wandered in and out of shops as we made our way along.  I hemmed and hawed over a pair of boots in Marks & Spencer but eventually decided against them. (That’s me being financially responsible again).  Grafton St was fairly busy with last minute Christmas shoppers.

Since arriving in Ireland I have been badgering Mum to teach me to knit again.  She taught me to knit when I was a child but it’s been years since I picked up a pair of knitting needles so I have forgotten how to do it.  We stopped into a knitting store where I bought all the bits and pieces for two projects - fingerless gloves and a baby cardigan.  I loved all the color in the store.

We had a yummy lunch and were so stuffed that we could only look at the cupcakes on display.  There was no way we could fit another morsel in.

Halfway up the stairs to Sacre Coeur.
Sometimes Baby Girl would remind me that I am 5 months pregnant and force me to have a little rest.

Paris Highlights
Trying to photograph myself in all my new Parisian duds - suede over-the-knee boots and a faux fur gilet.  Both of which I bought at bargain prices.
